Opal-Fortune-Radiance-Magic

Forming in fissures of almost any kind of rock, Opals feature an unusual internal structure which causes the diffraction of light and the wonderful colour displays they are known for. Australia is the main source of precious Opals and produces the world’s finest examples of this unique gemstone. The ‘Olympic Australis’ mined from Coober Pedy, South Australia, weighed in at 17,000 carats.

Opals come in three different types, solid, doublet and triplet. Solid Opals, as the name suggests, consist of only the crystal part of the Opal and are very rare and very expensive. A more affordable style of Opals are doublets and triplets. A doublet is a slice of crystal Opal which is attached to a backing of another stone like ironstone or the non-crystalline Opal called ‘Potch’. A triplet is a thinner slice of crystal Opal sandwiched between the backing stone and a glass or sometimes acrylic surface. A triplet needs this top layer as the slice of crystal Opal is much thinner and needs more protection.

A silver cloth is preferred for cleaning as some of the chemical dips can damage the stones and strip the silver of its beautiful lustre.
