Prized since antiquity for its intense blue, the finest Lapis comes from Afghanistan and when ground to a fine powder it is the pigment for the artist’s colour ultramarine. Considered more precious than gold, Michelangelo was known to leave paintings unfinished when he couldn’t afford the treasured compound.
